St Teilo's Church in Wales High School - Sanctuary Furniture

St Teilo’s Church in Wales school for 11 to 18 year olds is located in Llanedeyrn in the Diocese of Llandaff, and maintains a strong Christian tradition. The school has become a parish incorporating two older church congregations into a new church centred on the school. St Teilo's chose Treske to work on designs and make their new sanctuary furniture with a brief to create furniture that was inspiring, showed off craft, and would withstand daily school life.

Designs for the new altar, celebrants chairs, two lectern readers, pascal candle and processional candle stands were developed echoing some of the areas coal mining past with tapered shapes, and using St Teilo’s cross carved and picked out in silver on the furniture frontals. Silver candle stands and sconces were also made for the furniture.

The most common place of use in the modern assembly hall is on the stage so the furniture had to be of a scale and design to hold the viewer and be visible from distance catering for congregations of between 200 to 900. The hope is that the furniture helps uphold the guiding principles of the school of excellence, equity and faith, through wisdom, hope, community and dignity.
